Gold Rises as Promising Diplomatic Efforts in the Middle East Start

Gold prices ticked up as the week started as diplomatic efforts to deescalate tensions in the Middle East between Tehran and Washington got underway. Prices of crude oil also declined. Investors continue assessing how the recent rise in oil prices will affect markets.

Spot gold rallied 0.5% to sell at $4,023 per ounce while gold futures slated for August delivery recovered by 0.3% to go for $4,028 an ounce.

As markets absorbed news that mediation efforts were ongoing between the United States and Iran, oil prices retreated. Traders are calculating how these efforts at diplomacy weigh against new threats from the Houthis regarding their plans to blockade ports in Saudi Arabia and how the mediation will impact the recent surge in hostilities between Washington and Tehran.

This recent flare-up in hostilities had caused oil to rise above $80 per barrel on Monday. This rise marked the highest price that oil had traded at in the last 4-6 weeks.

Markets also have U.S. monetary policy to think about. An increasing number of decision-makers are arguing that monetary policy may need to be tightened in light of persistent inflation that is way above the set 2% target. The next meeting of the FOMC is therefore going to be closely watched for the policy direction the Fed decides is necessary given the prevailing circumstances.

When interest rates are increased or stay elevated for long, non-yielding assets such as gold tend to come under pressure as most investors opt to channel their money into asset classes like Treasuries which give them a return.

In Moscow, the central bank revealed that Russia’s reserves of gold had reduced by 43.5 tons from the amount held as the year started. Current holdings now stand at 2,282 tons as of July 1, according to official figures. The country has been selling some of its reserves in order to access the liquidity it needs to keep the economy running amid having to sustain its war effort in Ukraine while navigating heavy international sanctions.

Among precious metals, platinum is the only one that recorded a price decline. It retreated by 0.2% and is now priced at $1,591 an ounce. Silver is going for $56.9 an ounce after gaining 0.9% while palladium rallied by 0.3% and is going for $1,256.6 an ounce.

Market fundamentals, geopolitics and U.S. monetary policy are constantly reshaping precious metals prices. Stakeholders like Platinum Group Metals Ltd. (NYSE American: PLG) (TSX: PTM) have plenty to stay on top of in order to align their strategies with these changing realities.
