Ongoing Debasement Trade Could Help Platinum Outperform Gold

While inflation fears have exerted pressure on precious metal prices, the WPIC (World Platinum Investment Council) thinks platinum is well positioned to outperform gold as the debasement trade continues. WPIC says the market fundamentals of platinum remain tight as investment demand gathers momentum.

The council says that the first half of the year was characterized by selling pressure, but this has eased and buyers are slowly regaining the upper hand as the second half of 2026 progresses.

WPIC’s research director Edward Sterck explains that precious metals and other commodities struggled earlier in the year largely because of the conflict in the Middle East. Elevated oil prices triggered concerns about a sharp rise in inflation and investment demand for precious metals like platinum and gold suffered.

The conflict with Iran had such a dramatic impact that monetary policy expectations in the U.S. quickly shifted from projections of two rate cuts by the year’s end to two possible hikes. Precious metals took a beating as a result.

Sterck says that despite the selling pressure that materialized each time hawkish monetary policy news emerged, the retreat in the platinum market was quickly followed by buying activity, restoring some of the gains that had been lost. As a result, prices have, on average, been inching higher though they are yet to come close to the highs recorded in the first months of the year.

He added that platinum has a real chance of outperforming gold this year by about 30% if precious metals regain their bullish footing. However, he cautioned that if prices move in the opposite direction in a sustained way, platinum risks underperforming gold by the same margin of 30%.

Platinum’s potential outperformance is supported by several factors that include tightness in physical supply of the metal as well as emerging industrial uses that didn’t exist before. These include the increasing use of platinum and other PGMs in the AI industry in the manufacture of high-tech semiconductors, printed circuit boards, optical interconnects and hard drives.

The use of platinum in the glass industry has also jumped by 41% over the past 12 months, opening a new driver of demand. Constrained mine production, coupled with these accelerating demand drivers, puts platinum in a good position to see its prices rise notably.

That said, macroeconomic and geopolitical factors continue to hang over the platinum market, and stakeholders like Platinum Group Metals Ltd. (NYSE American: PLG) (TSX: PTM) will be weighing each of these factors as they evolve over the coming months.
